Hyde County is located in the northeastern region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Swan Quarter. The county was created in 1739 as a precinct in Bath County and called Wickham Precinct. Its name was changed to Hyde in 1712 in honor of the current Governor of North Carolina, Edward Hyde. When Bath County was abolished in 1739, it was changed into a county. The total area of the county is 1,424 square miles. According to the 2010 census, there are 5,810 people currently living in the county. Hyde County is bordered in the north by Washington County and Tyrell County, in the east by Dare County, in the southwest by Carteret County, and in the west by Pamlico County and Beaufort County.
