Halifax County is located in the northeast region of North Carolina. Halifax is also the name of its county seat. The county was created in 1758 and named in honor of the 2nd Earl of Halifax, George Montague-Dunk. The total area of the county is 731 square miles with a population of 54,691 (2010). The county is bordered in the north by Northampton County, in the east by Bertie County, in the southeast by Martin County, in the south by Edgecombe and Nash counties, and in the west by Warren County.
