Greene County, North Carolina Overview

Greene County can be found in the southeast region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Snow Hill. The county was established in 1791 from part of Dobbs County and initially named Glasgow after the then North Carolina Secretary of State, James Glasgow. In 1799, the name was changed to Greene, in honor of Nathanael Greene – one of the right-hand men of General Washington, when it was Glasgow was asked to resign and leave the state due to his involvement in military land grant frauds. The total area of the county is 266 square miles with a population of 21,362 (2010 census). The county is bordered in the north by Wilson County, in the east by Pitt County, in the south by Lenoir County, and in the west by Wayne County. The zip codes are 27888, 28538, 28554, and 28580.

The Register of Deeds office is the custodian of all real estate related documents and vital records for Greene County. The documents recorded and filed in this office include deeds, deeds of trust, maps, easements, leases, assignments, and Uniform Commercial Codes (UCCS) as fixture filings on real property. The office also issues marriage licenses and administers the oath to Notary Publics that reside in the county.

To record a deed with the Register of Deeds Office, you can download the tax form from the website and have it signed by the Greene County Tax Office. Index searches can be done online for documents from 1993 through the present. Certified copies of birth, death, and marriage certificates are also available at the Register of Deeds Office. You will be required to download the application form and submit the completed application along with a valid picture ID and the fee which is $10 in cash. Requests can also be submitted through mail.
