Gates County, North Carolina Overview
Gates County is located in the northeast region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Gatesville. The county was formed in 1779 and named in honor of General Horatio Gates who lead the American colonial forces to victory during the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. The total area of the county is 346 square miles with a population of 12,197 (2010 census). The county is bordered in the north by the City of Suffolk County (VA); in the northeast by Camden County; in the east by Pasquotank County; in the south by Perquimans County and Chowan County; and in the west by Hertford County. Gates County Officials Information
The Register of Deeds Office handles the recording and maintenance of land transactions within the county as well as issues marriage licenses.
