Cleveland County, North Carolina

Cleveland County is located in the state of North Carolina. The county was formed in 1841 from parts of Rutherford County and Lincoln County. The county was named after Benjamin Cleveland, a colonel in the American Revolutionary War, who took part in the Battle of King’s Mountain. Shelby is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 98,074 people and a total area of 468 square miles, of which 4.0 square miles is water and 464 square miles is land. Cleveland County borders the following counties: Burke County to the north; Lincoln County to the northeast; Gaston County to the east; York County, South Carolina, to the southeast; Cherokee County, South Carolina, to the south; and Rutherford County to the west.

The Cleveland County Register of Deeds is charged with a number of responsibilities, including filing, recording, and maintaining all public records in the county. Some of the records maintained by the office of the Register of Deeds include but are not limited to any record/document relating to ownership, liens, mortgages, leases, agreements, transfer of real property, and vital records (birth records, marriage certificates, and death records).
