Clay County is located in the southwest region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Hayesville. Clay County was created in 1861 and named in honor of former Secretary of State Henry Clay. The bordering counties are Cherokee County in the northwest, Macon County in the northeast, Rabun County (GA) in the southeast, Towns County (GA) in the south, and Union County (GA) in the southwest.
