Cherokee County can be found in the southwesternmost tip of North Carolina. Its county seat is Murphy. Cherokee County was established in 1839 and named after the Native Americans living in the area. The county’s total area is 467 square miles with 27,444 people living in the area according to the 2010 census. The county is bordered in the north by Graham County and Monroe County, in the northeast by Macon County, in the southeast by Clay County, in the south by Fannin County and Union County, and in the west by Polk County.
