Burke County, North Carolina
Burke County is located in the state of North Carolina. The county was formed in 1777 from parts of Rowan County. It was named for Thomas Burke, then serving as a delegate to the Continental Congress. Morganton is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 90,912 people and a total area of 515 square miles, of which 8.0 square miles is water and 507 square miles is land. Burke County borders the following counties: Avery County to the northwest, Caldwell County to the north, Catawba County to the east, Lincoln County to the southeast, Cleveland County to the south, McDowell County to the west, and Rutherford County to the southwest.
