Buncombe County is located in the western region of North Carolina. The county seat is Asheville. Buncombe County was created from parts of Rutherford County and Burke County in 1791. It was named in honor of an American Revolutionary War colonel who was captured during the Battle of Germantown, Edward Buncombe. The total area of the county is 660 square miles. Based on the 2010 census, there are 238,318 people living in this area. The county is bordered by Madison County in the north, by Yancey County in the northeast, by McDowell County in the east, by Rutherford County in the southeast, by Henderson County in the south, and by Haywood County in the west.
