Brunswick County is located in the state of North Carolina. The county was formed in 1764 from parts of New Hanover County and Bladen County, and it was named after the colonial port of Brunswick Town, which was named for Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Leland is the largest town in the county, while Bolivia is the county seat; other cities in the county include Boiling Spring Lakes, Northwest, and Southport. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 107,431 people and a total area of 1,050 square miles, of which 203 square miles is water and 547 square miles is land, making it the fourth-largest county in North Carolina by total area. Brunswick County borders the following counties: Pender County to the northeast; New Hanover County to the east; Horry County, South Carolina, to the southwest; and Columbus County to the northwest.
