Bertie County is located in the northeastern region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Windsor. Established in 1722, Bertie County was named in honor of one of the Lords Proprietors of Carolina, Jamie or Henry Bertie. It was originally a precinct until it was declared a county in 1739. Bertie County has a total area of 741 square miles with 20,199 residents according to the 2015 census. The county is bordered in the north by Hertford County, in the east by Chowan County, in the southeast by Washington County, in the south by Martin County, in the west by Halifax County, in the northwest by Northampton County.
