Beaufort County, North Carolina Overview

Beaufort County can be found in the northeastern region in North Carolina. It was created in 1705 from part of Bath County and named Pamptecough Precinct. In 1712, it was renamed to Beaufort after the 3rd Duke of Beaufort, Henry Scudamore, then turned into a county in 1739. The county seat is Washington. Beaufort County has an estimated 47,459 residents (2010 census) living in its 958-square mile area. The county is bordered in the north by Martin County and Washington County, in the east by Hyde County, in the south by Pamlico County, in the southwest by Craven County, and in the west by Pitt County.
