Avery County can be found in the Northwest region of North Carolina. Newland serves as its county seat. Avery county was established in 1911, the youngest of all the counties in North Carolina. It was named in honor of the first Attorney General of North Carolina who also served as a colonel during the American Revolutionary War, Waightstill Avery. The total area of the county is 247 square miles with a population of 17,797 (2010 census). The county is bordered in the northeast by Watauga County, in the southeast by Caldwell County, in the south by Burke County and McDowell County, in the north by Johnson County (TN), in the northwest by Carter County (TN), and in the southwest by Mitchell County.
