Alleghany Carolina is located in the Northwestern Region of North Carolina. It was created in 1859 from part of Ashe County and named after the Allegheny Mountain Range. The county has 11,155 people living in the 237-square mile area, according to the 2010 census. The county seat is Sparta. Alleghany County is bordered in the north by Grayson County (VA), in the east by Surry County, in the south by Wilkes County, and in the west by Ashe County.
