Alexander County is located in the Northwest Region of North Carolina. The county seat is Taylorsville. Alexander County was created in 1847 by the North Carolina General Assembly from parts of Caldwell, Iredell, and Wilkes Counties. It was named in honor of a Speaker of the North Carolina House of Commons, William Julius Alexander. The total area of the county is 264 square miles with a population of 37,198 based on the 2010 census. The county is bordered in the north by Wilkes County, in the east by Iredell County, in the south by Catawba County, and in the west by Caldwell County.
