Westchester County is located in the state of New York. The county was formed in 1683 and named after the city of Chester, England. The county seat is the city of White Plains. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 949,113 people and a total area of 500 square miles, of which 69 square miles is water and 430 square miles is land. Westchester County borders the following counties: Putnam County to the north; Litchfield County, Connecticut, to the northeast; Fairfield County, Connecticut, to the east; Nassau County to the southeast; Bronx County to the south; Bergen County, New Jersey, to the southwest; Rockland County to the west; and Orange County to the northwest.
The Westchester County Clerk is charged with the responsibility of maintaining all public records in the county. Deeds and land records date back to 1680, and mortgages by county residents date back to 1950. Some of the records maintained by the office include but are not limited to deeds, warranty deeds, mortgages, liens, releases, leases, and other legal documents.
Documents maintained by the office of the clerk are public records and are open to the public for inspection. Public records can be accessed either by visiting the County Clerk’s office in person during office hours or doing a background check online. To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the Westchester County Clerk Website. Some of the records that can be searched online include land records (deeds and mortgages), legal records (court cases, judgments, and liens), and maps. When obtaining copies of public records in person, you will be required to present the clerk with a written request. The request should contain as much detailed information as possible relating to the records you are requesting. Please send a letter to the clerk in order to obtain land records. The cost is $5.00 for each request made.
