Ulster County, New York

Ulster County is located in the state of New York. The county was formed in 1683 and named after the Irish province of Ulster. Kingston is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 182,495 people and a total area of 1,161 square miles, of which 37 square miles is water and 1,124 square miles is land. Ulster County borders the following counties: Greene County to the north, Columbia County to the northeast, Dutchess County to the southeast, Orange County to the south, Sullivan County to the southwest, and Delaware County to the northwest.

As of 2015, Nina Postupack is the Ulster County Clerk. The county clerk’s office acts as custodian of the records for the County. The office oversees records back to 1683, including maps, liens, judgments, mortgages, deeds, and civil and criminal actions. In addition, drivers’ licenses, registrations for automobiles, and other motor vehicle transactions can be done at the county clerk’s office.

Public records can be accessed either by visiting the County Clerk’s office in person or doing a background check online. To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the Ulster County Clerk Website. Records that are available online date back to 1685 and include powers of attorney, deeds, mortgages, assignments, and satisfaction of mortgages, as well as many other document types. While on the website, remember to check the fee schedule. When requesting copies of instruments in person, make reference to the parties involved in the transactions and, if known, the filing or book and page number.  This should be indicated in the written request that you will submit at the clerk’s office.  In addition, you can make telephone requests for recorded information for land records from 1984 to the present.
