Tompkins County, New York
Tompkins County is located in the state of New York. The county was formed on April 7, 1817, by combining portions of Seneca County and the remainder of Cayuga County. It was named after Daniel D. Tompkins, who served as Governor of New York and Vice President of the United States. Ithaca is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 101,564 people and a total area of 492 square miles, of which 17 square miles is water and 475 square miles is land. Tompkins County borders the following counties: Cayuga County to the north, Cortland County to the east, Tioga County to the south, Chemung County to the southwest, Schuyler County to the west, and Seneca County to the northwest.
Maureen Reynolds is the current Tompkins County Clerk, as of 2015. The clerk is the legal custodian of all public records in the county.
