Steuben County, New York
Steuben County is located in the state of New York. The county was formed in 1796 after splitting off from Ontario County; it was named after Baron von Steuben, a German general who fought on the American side in the Revolutionary War. Corning is the largest city in the county, but Bath is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 98,990 people and a total area of 1,404 square miles, of which 14 square miles is water and 1,391 square miles is land. Steuben County borders the following counties: Ontario County to the north, Yates County to the northeast; Schuyler County to the east; Chemung County to the east; Tioga County, Pennsylvania, to the south; Potter County, Pennsylvania to the southwest; Allegany County to the west; and Livingston County to the northwest.
Judith M. Hunter is the current Steuben County Clerk, as of 2015. The county clerk is the official recorder for all public records and legal documents pertaining to property ownership, business, and civil and criminal cases.
