St. Lawrence County is a county located in the state of New York. The county was formed in 1802. Named after the Saint Lawrence River, the county seat is Canton and it has a population of 111,944 as of 2010. The county has a total area of 2821 square miles, with its land area encompassing 2680 square miles, and its water area 141 square miles.

The main function of the County Clerk’s Office is that of record keeper for the county, serving as a recording office for deeds, mortgages and many other legal documents pertaining to real estate. The County Clerk is also the Clerk of the Supreme and County Courts and files divorces, judgments and many other documents for these courts in this office. Furthermore, the County Clerk’s Office issues pistol permits, veterans ID cards, peddler permits to veterans, transient merchant licenses, administers & files oaths of office, military discharges, autopsy/coroner reports, notary public commissions, business certificates (DBA). This office serves as a passport acceptance agent and as a collection office for fines and surcharges ordered to be paid by the courts.
