Queens, New York

Queens is the easternmost and largest in area of the five boroughs of New York City. Queens was formed in 1683 as one of the original 12 counties of New York and was named for the Portuguese Princess Catherine of Braganza (1638–1705), who was at the time Queen of Ireland, Scotland, and England. Queens became a borough of New York City in 1898. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Queens County has a population of approximately 2,321,580 people and a total area of 178 square miles, of which 70 square miles is water and 109 square miles is land. Queens borders the following counties: Bronx County (the Bronx) to the north, Nassau County to the east, Kings County (Brooklyn) to the west, and New York County (Manhattan) to the northwest.

The Office of the City Register is responsible for filing and maintaining the New York City public records for the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. Records maintained by the office include but are not limited to real and personal property transfers, interest, and ownership information.

Public records can be accessed either by visiting the office of the register in person or doing a background check online. To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the City Register’s Website or the Automated City Register Information System (ACRIS). While on the website, click on the relevant link to access records that are available online. Records available online date back to 1966. When obtaining records in person, you will be required to submit a written request to the City Register. The request should contain as much detailed information as possible relating to the records you are requesting.  The fee for obtaining copies of public records is $4 a page for certified copies, and uncertified copies are $1 a page.
