Onondaga County, New York

Onondaga County is located in the state of New York. The county was formed in 1794 after being split off from Herkimer County. The name of the county comes from the name of the Native American tribe which historically lived in this area at the time of European contact. Syracuse is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 467,026 people and a total area of 806 square miles, of which 27 square miles is water and 778 square miles is land. Onondaga County borders the following counties: Oswego County to the north, Madison County to the east, Cortland County to the south, and Cayuga County to the west.

The Onondaga County Clerk’s Office acts as custodian of all public records in the county. Some of the records maintained by the office of the clerk include but are not limited to deeds, mortgages, judgments, liens, maps, civil and criminal actions, and other official documents dating back to 1794.

As a service to the public, the office of the clerk has created a way for the public to search for  records by doing a public records search through the Onondaga County Clerk’s Website. Information for 1970 to 1977 for mortgages and deeds is not complete. To search for these records, you have to visit the office of the clerk in person. When visiting the office of the clerk, you will be required to submit a written request, with details of the records you are requesting. Alternatively you can mail the written request, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope and $.65 cents per page or $1.30 per document minimum, to:
