Niagara County is located in the state of New York. It was created from Genesee County on March 11, 1808. The county name is from the Iroquois word “Onguiaahra”, meaning the strait or thunder of waters. Niagara Falls is the largest city in the county, while Lockport is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 216,469 people and a total area of 1,140 square miles, of which 617 square miles is water and 522 square miles is land. Niagara County borders the following counties: Orleans County to the east, Genesee County to the southeast, Erie County to the south, and Regional Municipality of Niagara, Ontario, Canada, to the west.
