Nassau County, New York

Nassau County is a suburban county in the state of New York. It was formed in 1899 by the division of Queens County. The name of the county comes from an old name for Long Island, which was at one time named Nassau, after the Dutch Prince William of Nassau. Hempstead is the largest town in the county, while its county seat is located in the Village of Garden City. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 1,339,532 people and a total area of 453 square miles, of which 169 square miles is water and 285 square miles is land. Nassau County borders the following counties: Bronx County to the northwest; Fairfield County, Connecticut, to the north; Queens County to the west; Suffolk County to the east; and Westchester County to the northwest.

Maureen O’Connell is the current Nassau County Clerk. Her office is charged with the responsibility of maintaining all public records relating to real estate in the county. Some of the records maintained by the clerk’s office include but are not limited to deeds, mortgages, divorce decrees, annulments, separation agreements, and other official documents.

Certified copies of documents maintained by the clerk’s office can be obtained by visiting the office of the clerk in person or by mailing a written request to the clerk’s office. It is important to note that the Clerk’s Office does not maintain vital records (births, deaths, and marriages), except for marriage certificates filed from 1907 to April 29, 1935. Whether your request is in person or by mail, you will need your property section, block and lot number (located on your tax bill), and the appropriate fee ($5 in person for 1-4 pages and $10 by mail, which includes a $5 search fee).  For more information relating to public records, visit the Nassau County Clerk’s Website.
