Fulton County is located in the state of New York. The county was established on April 18, 1838, by a partition of Montgomery County and named after Robert Fulton, who is widely credited with developing the first commercially successful steamboat. Gloversville is the largest city in the county, while Johnstown is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 55,531 people and a total area of 533 square miles, of which37 square miles is water and 495 square miles is land. Fulton County borders the following counties: Hamilton County to the north, Saratoga County to the east, Montgomery County to the south, and Herkimer County to the west.
