Columbia County is located in the state of New York. The county was formed after the American Revolutionary War in 1786 from portions of Albany County. Hudson is the county seat and also the largest city in the county. The name of the county comes from the Latin feminine form of the name of Christopher Columbus, which was a popular proposal for the name of the United States of America at the time of the formation of the county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 63,069 people and a total area of 648 square miles, of which 14 square miles is water and 635 square miles is land. Columbia County borders the following counties: Rensselaer County to the north; Berkshire County, Massachusetts, to the east; Dutchess County to the south; Ulster County to the southwest; Greene County to the west; Albany County to the northwest; and Litchfield County, Connecticut, to the southeast.
