Chautauqua County, New York

Chautauqua County is a county in the state of New York. The county was established in 1808 and later organized in 1811. The county’s name may be a contraction of a Seneca Indian word meaning “bag tied in the middle”. Jamestown is the largest city in the county, while Mayville is the county seat; the other city in the county is Dunkirk. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 134,905 people and a total area of 1,500 square miles, of which 440 square miles is water and 1,060 square miles is land. Chautauqua County borders the following counties: Erie County to the northeast; Cattaraugus County to the east; Warren County, Pennsylvania, to the southeast; and Erie County, Pennsylvania, to the southwest.

The Chautauqua County Clerk is responsible for the recording of all land documents in the county, oversees the Department of Weights and Measures, serves as the clerk for the Supreme and County courts and County Historian, and heads the three Department of Motor Vehicle Bureau offices in the county. Some of the records maintained by the office of the clerk include but are not limited to mortgages, military discharges, deeds, discharge of mortgages, vital records (birth, marriage, and death records), and many other documents pertaining to real estate.

Records maintained by the office of the clerk can be accessed by doing a background check online. To obtain records online, you will be required to do a public records search through the Chautauqua County Clerk’s Website. However, copies of records obtained online are not certified and cannot be used for official purposes. To obtain certified copies of public records, you will be required to visit the office of the clerk in person during office hours. Some of the records that can be obtained include census records from 1825 to 1925 and marriage records from 1908 to 1935.
