Cayuga County, New York

Cayuga County is located in the state of New York. The county was formed in 1799 by the splitting of Onondaga County and named after one of the tribes of Indians in the Iroquois Confederation. Auburn is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 80,026 people and a total area of 864 square miles, of which 172 square miles is water and 692 square miles is land. Cayuga County borders the following counties: Oswego County to the northeast, Onondaga County to the east, Cortland County to the southeast, Tompkins County to the south, Seneca County to the west, Wayne County to the west, and Prince Edward County, Ontario, to the north.

The Cayuga County Clerk’s office is charged with the responsibility of maintaining instruments/documents relating to land transactions in the county. Some of the records maintained by the office of the clerk include but are not limited to deeds, mortgages, liens, lis pendens, state tax liens, federal tax liens. and several other documents related to real estate property located in Cayuga County.

Records maintained by the office of the clerk can be accessed in two main ways, by either doing a background check online or by visiting the office of the clerk in person during office hours. When obtaining records online, you will be required to do a public records search through the Cayuga County Clerk’s Website. On the other hand, when obtaining records in person, you will be required to present a written request, with details of the records you are requesting. Copy fees for records held by the County Clerk are $.65 per copy. with a $1.30 minimum charge, and the fee for marriage records is $22.00 each. The charges for other records are $.25 per image, plus postage. All money orders or checks should be made payable to the Cayuga County Clerk.
