Albany County, New York

Albany County is located in the state of New York. The county was formed on November 1, 1683, and named after the Duke of York and of Albany, who became James II of England (James VII of Scotland). The county seat is Albany, the state capital; other cities in the county include Cohoes and Watervliet. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 304,204 people and a total area of 533 square miles, of which 10 square miles is water and 523 square miles is land. Albany County is bordered by six counties; they are: Schenectady County to the north, Saratoga County to the northeast, Rensselaer County to the east, Columbia County to the southeast, Greene County to the south, and Schoharie County to the west.

Hon. Bruce A. Hidley is the current Albany County Clerk, as of 2015. The office of the clerk is charged with the primary responsibility of maintaining public documents in the county.  Some of the records maintained by the office of the clerk include plats; federal, state and county tax liens; deeds; mortgages and their assignments and satisfactions; and military discharges.

Deeds and mortgages recorded by the office of the clerk from 1980 to present can be accessed by doing a public records search through the online portal. If you need a copy of a deed or mortgage recorded by the clerk’s office before 1980, or you can find the records you are looking for online but cannot view the image of the document, you will need to send a search fee of $5.00, payable to “Albany County Clerk.” When doing a public records search online, you can also access images of lis pendens, UCC’s, judgments, liens, DBA’s, and warrants.
