Catron County, New Mexico Overview

Catron County is located in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The county was formed in 1921 and named after Thomas Benton Catron, a Santa Fe attorney and New Mexico’s first U.S. Senator. The county seat is Reserve. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 3,508 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,929 square miles of which 6,924 square miles is land and 5.5 square miles is water. Catron County borders the following counties: Cibola County to the north; Socorro County to the east; Sierra County to the southeast; Grant County to the south; Greenlee County, Arizona to the west and Apache County, Arizona to the west. Catron County Clerk’s Office Information

The County Clerk is an elected county official. The primary responsibilities of the office include:

  • Handling voter registration and election administration.
  • Acting as ex-officio clerk of the County Probate Court.
  • Acting as ex-officio clerk to the Catron County Board of Commissioners, creating and maintaining minutes of the board for permanent record.
  • Recording, filing and preserving all types of documents submitted for public and permanent record, i.e. deeds, mortgages, agreements, etc.
  • Issuing Marriage Licenses and maintaining database for permanent record.
