Sussex County, New Jersey Overview
Sussex County is located in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The county was formed in 1753 and named after the county of Sussex in England. The county seat is Newton. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2017, the county has a population of approximately 141,682 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 535.74 square miles of which 519.01 square miles is land and 16.73 square miles is water. Sussex County borders the following counties: Orange County, New York to the northeast (along the boundary line between New York and New Jersey); Passaic County, New Jersey to the east; Morris County, New Jersey to the east and south; Warren County, New Jersey to the southwest; Monroe County, Pennsylvania to the west (for a few hundred yards at the county’s westernmost tip, Walpack Bend in the Delaware River) and Pike County, Pennsylvania to the northwest (along the Delaware River). Sussex County Clerk’s Office Information
The duties of the County Clerk are numerous with special responsibilities including, but not limited to: Administering the oath of office and certifying notaries; filing Trade Name Certificates; recording documents concerned with the purchase and sale of Real Estate; filing of Military Discharges and issuance of Veteran Identification Cards; filing of Sub-division Maps and Wetlands Riparian Aerial Photos; issuance of Veterans Peddlers Licenses; and the option of performing Wedding Ceremonies.
The County Clerk also plays a key role in the conduct of elections. All petitions for candidates for elective county offices are filed in this office. The County Clerk also draws for ballot position of candidates in the general election. This office is also in charge of printing early voting and sample ballots for the primary and general elections, and receives applications for, and mails, all early voting ballots. The County Clerk acts as clerk of the board of county canvassers and certifies official election results to the New Jersey Secretary of State. The Clerk’s Office is an acceptance agency for the Department of State and assists with the processing of passport applications.
