Storey County, Nevada Overview

Storey County is located in the U.S. state of Nevada. The county was formed in 1861 and named after Edward Farris Storey (1829–1860), a captain killed at Pyramid Lake in the 1860 Paiute War. The county seat is Virginia City. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2015, the county has a population of approximately 3,987 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 264 square miles of which 263 square miles is land and 0.7 square miles is water. Storey County borders the following counties: Washoe County to the north; Lyon County to the southeast and Carson City to the southwest. Storey County has five zip codes. Storey County District Courts Office Information

The Storey County District Court has general jurisdiction over all legal disputes. This is the court where criminal, civil, family, and juvenile matters are generally resolved through arbitration, mediation, and bench or jury trials. The judges also hear appeals from Justice Court cases.

The First Judicial District Court serves Storey County and Carson City. It is comprised of two elected district judges. Both judges have a judicial assistant, law clerk, and court reporter.

The Justice Court handles:

• Evictions.
• Misdemeanor crime and traffic matters.
• Other civil matters less than $10,000.
• Small claims dispute.

The Justice of the Peace also presides over felony and gross misdemeanor arraignments and conducts preliminary hearings to determine if sufficient evidence exists to hold criminals for trial at District Court.

Storey County Recorder’s Office Information

The County Recorder is charged with recording documents and filing maps and maintaining cross reference indexes to these records. The office provides retrieval of records for public viewing and produces copies and certifications of records. Real property transfer tax is collected on transfers of real property.
