Lyon County is located in the U.S. state of Nevada. The county was formed in 1861 and named after General Nathaniel Lyon (1818–1861), who was killed in action at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. The county seat is Yerington. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2015, the county has a population of approximately 52,585 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,024 square miles of which 2,001 square miles is land and 23 square miles is water. Lyon County borders the following counties: Washoe County to the north; Storey County to the northwest; Churchill County to the east; Douglas County to the west; Carson City to the west; Mineral County to the southeast and Mono County, California to the southwest.
