Wayne County is located in Northeast Nebraska. Its county seat is also called Wayne. The county was organized in 1870 by a proclamation of Governor David Butler. It was named in honor of General Anthony Wayne, a hero during the American Revolutionary War. The total area of the county is 443 square miles with a population of 9,595 (2010). The adjacent counties are Cedar County in the north, Dixon County in the northeast, Thurston County in the east, Cuming County in the southeast, Stanton County in the south, and Pierce County in the west.
