Saunders County can be found in the southeastern region of Nebraska. Its county seat is Wahoo. Founded in 1856 by an act of Nebraska Territorial Legislature, the county was only organized in 1866 and originally named in honor of John C. Calhoun. In 1862, the county was renamed after Alvin Saunders, the longest-serving governor of the Nebraska Territory. The county’s total area measures 760 square miles with a population of 20,780 (2010). The adjacent counties are Dodge County in the north, Douglas County in the northeast, Sarpy County in the east, Cass County in the southeast, Lancaster County in the south, and Butler County in the west.
