Kearney County is in the south central region of Nebraska with Minden serving as its county seat. Formed in 1860, the county was named after Fort Kearny which, in turn, was named in honor of Stephen W. Kearny, a Brigade General who made significant contributions in the Mexican-American War. The total area of the county is 516 square miles and the population is 6,489 (2010).
