Butler County is in the southeast region of Nebraska. Its county seat is David City. The county was founded in 1856 and is believed to have been named in honor of either David Butler, the governor of Nebraska from 1867 to 1871, or William Orlando Butler, who declined to become the first governor of Nebraska Territory. The total area of the county is 591 square miles with a population of 8,395 (2010). The surrounding counties are Colfax County in the north, Saunders County in the east, Seward County in the south, Polk County in the west, and Platte County in the northwest.
