Box Butte County can be found in the western region of Nebraska. Alliance serves as the county seat. The county was created in 1886 from a partitioning of the Nebraska Panhandle. Its name was derived from a butte located north of Alliance that had a large box shape. The county’s total area is 1,078 square miles with a population of 11,308 based on the 2010 census. The counties surrounding the area are Daws County in the north, Sheridan County in the east, Morrill County in the south, Scotts Bluff County in the southwest, and Sioux County in the west.
