Lincoln County, Montana Overview

Lincoln County is located in the U.S. state of Montana. The county was formed in 1909 and named after Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. The county seat is Libby. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2015, the county has a population of approximately 19,052 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,675 square miles of which 3,615 square miles is land and 62 square miles is water. Lincoln County borders the following counties: Regional District of Central Kootenay, British Columbia to the northwest; Regional District of East Kootenay, British Columbia to the north; Flathead County to the east; Sanders County to the south; Bonner County, Idaho to the southwest/Pacific Time Border and Boundary County, Idaho to the northwest/Pacific Time Border. Lincoln County Clerk of District Courts Office Information

The Lincoln County Clerk of District Court’s Office protects public access to the 19th Judicial District Court of Montana and provides the necessary checks and balances for the judicial system. The Clerk of District Court is the official holder of all District Court records for Lincoln County. These records include adoption, civil, criminal, dependent neglect, domestic relations, guardianship, juvenile, marriage license, paternity, probate, sanity and statutory liens cases.

The Clerk of District Court also serves as Jury Commissioner for Lincoln County. As required by statute, the Clerk shall prepare a jury list for Libby City Court, Eureka City Court, Troy City Court, Justice Court and District Court within the County. In addition, the Clerk of District Court maintains the master jury list for Lincoln County.

The records in the Clerk of the District Court’s office date back to 1909 and were maintained in books until 1996. The Clerk and Recorder’s Office is the “record keeper” for the county. The primary responsibility of the Clerk and Recorder’s Office is to preserve and provide the public a true account of real property, commissioner meeting minutes, birth and death records, and other official county records.
