Flathead County, Montana

Flathead County is located in the state of Montana. The county was formed in 1893 and named after the Salish (Flathead) Indians. Kalispell is the largest city in the county and also the county seat; other cities in the county include Columbia Falls and Whitefish. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 90,928 people and a total area of 5,256 square miles, of which 169 square miles is water and 5,088 square miles is land, making it the third-largest county in Montana by land area and second-largest by total area. Flathead County borders the following counties: Regional District of East Kootenay, British Columbia, to the north; Glacier County to the east; Pondera County to the east; Teton County to the east; Lewis and Clark County to the southeast; Powell County to the southeast; Missoula County to the southeast; Lake County to the south; Sanders County to the southwest; and Lincoln County to the west.

As of 2015, Debbie Pierson is the Flathead County Clerk and Recorder. Her office is charged with the main responsibility of taking care of public records in the county. Documents maintained by the office pertain to deeds, warranty deeds, mortgages, liens, releases, leases, and other legal documents.

Records maintained by the office are public and can be obtained by the public. To access Flathead County documents that were recorded before 1984, you will find them as book and pages at the department’s Document Archives site. However, for documents that were recorded after 1984, you may access them through Idocmarket.  Alternatively, you can access public records by visiting the office of the recorder in person during office hours. You will be required to present a written request with details of the records you are requesting.

Flathead County Marriage License Office
In order to obtain a marriage license in Flathead County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
