Custer County is located in the U.S. state of Montana. The county was formed in 1865 and named after George Armstrong Custer, an officer of the United States Army. The county seat is Miles City. Custer County Clerk and Recorder’s Office Information
The Clerk and Recorder is an elected county official established by the Constitution of Montana. The primary administrative function of this office is recording and maintaining the majority of all the legal documents relating to real estate records, land descriptions, county birth and death records and the records of the Board of County Commissioners. The Clerk and Recorder’s Office also the Election Department and administer the maintenance of the voter registration files, candidate filings and all aspects of the election process.
This office maintains the birth and death certificates of Custer County and also has access to birth certificates for persons who were born in the State of Montana since 1920 and death certificates for persons who died statewide since 2003. A copy of your identification and a short simple form is required to issue birth and death certificates, in case any person requests one.
The office also has land records back to the beginning of Custer County- February 16, 1877. The office has begun microfilming the records in 1979, indexing on the computer July 1993, and scanning documents on the computer July 1998.
