Carbon County borders the following counties: Park County, Montana to the west; Stillwater County, Montana to the north; Yellowstone County, Montana to the northeast; Big Horn County, Montana to the east; Big Horn County, Wyoming to the southeast and Park County, Wyoming to the south. The Clerk of District Court’s office maintains public records that include marriage licenses, probate, dissolution (divorce), civil, and criminal files. To request information on a person, you may come to the office or write a letter asking for the information.

  • Search Fee: $2.00 per name per year for the first 7 years then $1.00 for each additional year.
  • Marriage License Fee: $5.00 for a copy of a marriage license, $7.00 for a certified copy (used for legal purposes)

The clerk and recorder is the ex-officio recorder, registrar, and ex-officio clerk of the county commissioners of Carbon County. The clerk and recorder also serve as the ex-officio election administrator. As the ex-officio election administrator, the clerk handles all federal, state, and county and city elections. The clerk and recorder is also the administrator of the county budget. The documents that are recorded and filed are: deeds, mortgages, powers of attorney, military discharges, oil and gas leases, liens, certificates of surveys and subdivision plats.
