Blaine County, Montana Overview
Blaine County is located in the U.S. state of Montana. The county was formed in 1895 and named after James G. Blaine, the United States Secretary of State and presidential candidate. The county seat is Chinook. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2015, the county has a population of approximately 6,577 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,239 square miles of which 4,228 square miles is land and 11 square miles is water. Blaine County borders the following counties: Hill County, Montana to the west; Chouteau County, Montana to the southwest; Fergus County, Montana to the south; Phillips County, Montana to the east; Reno No. 51, Saskatchewan to the northwest; Frontier No. 19, Saskatchewan to the north and Lone Tree No. 18, Saskatchewan to the northeast. Blaine County District Courts Office Information
The Clerk of District Court is a constitutionally mandated office authorized by statute to perform the following duties:
- Keep the records and schedules of the District Court.
- Take charge of and manage the records of the District Court.
- Attend court sessions and keep the minutes of the proceedings.
- Issue all processes and required notices.
- Properly enter all orders, judgments and decrees for the record.
- Act as the jury commissioner.
- Issue and record marriage licenses.
The Clerk of District Court is the official keeper of all District Court records for Blaine County. The Clerk records various documents that include, but are not limited to: adoption, civil, criminal, dependent and neglect, domestic relations, guardianship, juvenile, marriage license, paternity, probate and sanity cases.
The Clerk of District Court serves as Jury Commissioner for Blaine County. As required by statute, each May the Montana Secretary of State provides a combined list of registered voters, licensed drivers and holders of Montana identification cards to the Clerk of District Court. This list is stored and maintained electronically and it is from this list that jurors are pulled for the District Court, Justice Court and City Courts. The Blaine County Clerk of District Court also serves as the passport agent for Blaine County.
Most of the Clerk of District Court records are open to the public, but some are confidential and have restricted access. Records date back to 1912, when the county was created. The computer case management system has records since 1995. There is no internet access to court records.

Blaine County Clerk and Recorder’s Office Information
The clerk and recorder duties are the ex-officio clerk of the county commissioners, ex-officio recorder, registrar for Blaine County, ex-officio election administrator and the administrator of the county budget. Some of the documents that are recorded and filed for example are: deeds, mortgages, powers of attorney, military discharges, oil and gas leases, liens, certificates of surveys and subdivision plats. Certified and informational copies of birth and death certificates may be obtained from this office.
