Powell County is located in the U.S. state of Montana. The county was formed in 1901 and named after Mount Powell. The county seat is Deer Lodge. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2015, the county has a population of approximately 6,840 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,333 square miles of which 2,326 square miles is land and 6.3 square miles is water. Powell County borders the following counties: Flathead County, Montana to the north; Lewis and Clark County, Montana to the east; Jefferson County, Montana to the southeast; Deer Lodge County, Montana to the south; Granite County, Montana to the southwest and Missoula County, Montana to the west. Powell County Clerk of District Courts Office Information

The Clerk of District Court is the official keeper of all District Court records for Powell County. These records include adoption, civil, criminal, dependent neglect, domestic relations, guardianship, juvenile, paternity, probate and sanity cases. The Clerk also issues, files and records all Powell County marriage license applications and licenses. Additionally, the Clerk of District Court also serves as Jury Commissioner for Powell County.

As required by statute, each year the Secretary of State provides a combined list of registered voters, licensed drivers and holders of Montana ID cards to the Clerk of District Court. The provided list is stored and maintained electronically and jurors for the City, Justice and District Court Judges are selected from this list. The Clerk is responsible for maintaining an accurate listing of all selected jurors and to pull individual jury panels for the District Court Judge upon request.

Powell County Clerk and Recorder / Elections Administrator / Assessor’s Office Information

The County Clerk and Recorder records real estate and personal property documents, plats, surveys, birth and death certificates; maintains county wide accounting and financial reporting system, accounts payable, budgets and fixed asset control; issues landfill dumping permits; and maintains Community Center usage calendar. The Clerk and Recorder also serves as the county Election Administrator and Assessor. As Election Administrator, the Clerk conducts all federal, state, and county and city elections, maintains voter lists, etc. The Assessor’s Office locates and appraises all taxable real and personal property within Powell County and provides assessed values for all properties for the purpose of collecting property taxes.
