Missoula County is located in the U.S. state of Montana. The county was formed in 1864 and named after a contraction of the Flathead word, “im-i-sul-e-etiku”, meaning “by or near the place of fear or ambush”, a reference to Hell Gate Canyon, in which Flathead Native Americans were sometimes attacked by Blackfeet. The county seat is Missoula. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 116,130 people. Missoula County Clerk of District Courts Office Information

The Clerk of District Court is the official keeper of all District Court records for Missoula County. These records include adoption, civil, criminal, dependent neglect, domestic relations, guardianship, juvenile, paternity, probate and sanity cases. The Clerk of District Court records date back into the 1860s. The Clerk of District Court also serves as Jury Commissioner for Missoula County. As required by statute, each May the Secretary of State provides a combined list of registered voters, licensed drivers and holders of Montana ID cards to the Clerk of District Court. The Clerk also issues, files and records all Missoula County marriage license applications and licenses. Most of the Clerk of Court records are open to the public. Missoula County Clerk and Treasurer’s Office Information

The Missoula County Clerk and Treasurer is a combined office incorporating the constitutional offices of the clerk and recorder, treasurer, surveyor, and assessor. This office also hosts the local registrar appointed by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services to maintain vital records.

The Clerk and Treasurer’s Office primarily handles the collection of property taxes (real, personal, centrally assessed, and mobile homes), motor vehicle registrations and renewals, the issuance of itinerant business licenses (e.g., Christmas tree and fireworks stands), the collection and deposit of funds from other Missoula County departments, the recording and maintaining of real estate records, the filing of certain types of security interests, the maintenance of vital statistics records (e.g., birth certificates, death certificates, and veterans records), and the filing and maintaining of many public records for the County.

Most of the accounting and financial reporting obligations of the Treasurer’s office are performed by the Finance Department. Additionally, the Finance Department handles the budgeting responsibilities of the Clerk and Recorder. The Finance Department also handles the accounting and financial reporting obligations of the Clerk and Recorder.

The Treasurer division of the Missoula County Clerk and Treasurer primarily works to bill and collect property taxes. The four types of property taxes billed and collected by this office are:
