Lewis and Clark County, Montana
Lewis and Clark County is located in the state of Montana. The county was formed in 1865 as Edgerton County and was renamed “Lewis and Clark County” in 1867. The county was named in honor of explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Helena is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 63,395 and a total area of 3,948 square miles, of which 39 square miles is water and 3,459 square miles is land. Lewis and Clark County borders the following counties: Teton County to the north, Cascade County to the east, Meagher County to the east, Broadwater County to the southeast, Jefferson County to the south, Powell County to the west, and Flathead County to the northwest.

The Records Department is responsible for the recording, scanning, and indexing of public records. Some of the documents/instruments maintained by the department include surveys, mining work, resolutions, deeds, mortgages, military discharges, and many other various documents. The department also files federal tax liens, notices of action, attachments, birth and death records, judgments, executions, and other miscellaneous documents. Furthermore, the department is charged with the responsibility of processing realty transfer certificates, which are used by the Department of Revenue to determine the market value of real property.
