Carter County is located in the U.S. state of Montana. The county was formed in 1917 and named after Thomas Henry Carter, a U.S. Senator from Montana. The county seat is Ekalaka. The clerk and recorder is the ex-officio recorder, registrar, and ex-officio clerk of the county commissioners of Carter County. The clerk and recorder also act as the ex-officio election administrator and is responsible for administering all federal, state, and county and city elections. The clerk and recorder is also the administrator of the county budget. As ex-officio recorder of Carter County, the clerk is responsible for recording various documents that include: deeds, mortgages, powers of attorney, military discharges, oil and gas leases, liens, certificates of surveys and subdivision plats. Certified copies of birth and death certificates are also issued from this office.
