The county was formed in 1818 and named after James Madison, a politician and political philosopher who served as the fourth President of the United States, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. The county seat is Fredericktown. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 12,431 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 498 square miles of which 494 square miles is land and 3.2 square miles is water. Madison County borders the following counties: St. Francois County to the north; Perry County to the northeast; Bollinger County to the east; Wayne County to the south and Iron County to the west. The Recorder of Deeds is an elected position that has a four-year term.
