The county was formed in 1818 and named after James Madison, a politician and political philosopher who served as the fourth President of the United States, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. The county seat is Fredericktown. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 12,431 people. The Recorder of Deeds is an elected position that has a four-year term.
