Cape Girardeau County is located in the U.S. state of Missouri. The county was formed in 1812 and named after Ensign Sieur Jean Baptiste de Giradot, an official of the French colonial years. The county seat is Jackson. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 77,320 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 586 square miles of which 579 square miles is land and 7.8 square miles is water. Cape Girardeau County borders the following counties: Perry County to the northwest; Union County, Illinois to the northeast; Alexander County, Illinois to the east; Scott County to the southeast; Stoddard County to the south; and Bollinger County to the west. The Circuit Clerk is responsible for maintaining complete and accurate records of the court; collecting, accounting for and disbursing all monies paid into the court; and performing other duties, as necessary, to assist the court in performing its duties. Cape Girardeau County Recorder of Deeds Office Information

The Recorder of Deeds is responsible for the following:

  • Recording all records pertaining to land transactions, such as warranty deeds, deeds of trust, releases, plats, surveys, judgments, and tax liens.
  • Issuing and recording all marriage licenses and provide copies of the licenses.
  • Filing Military discharge records.
  • Collecting over $400,000 in revenue and budgeting expenses for the office. The office collects fees and disperses them monthly to various funds in the county and the state.
