The county was formed in 1836 and named after John Caldwell, an Indian scout, and friend of respected Colonel Alexander William Doniphan; John Caldwell, Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky; or Mathew Caldwell, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The county seat is Kingston. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 9,097 people.
